Interesting email I just got...

Yes, because USED tires are the safest tires. Well, probably safer than what’s on the person who buys used tires’ car right now.

I bought used tires within the last year, for my wife’s car (that usually carries the kids).

Why? Because two of the tires were damaged from a huge pot hole, the remaining two tires were well over half tread and a good brand, and Subarus have a pretty low tolerance for tires with different tread wear.

Besides, I got two tires of the exact same brand, same model, same size, and roughly the same wear as the two tires I was replacing, for about half the price of one brand new tire that would match the others.

Well yea, that’s why they need to go back to school - for spelling lessons I guess

I’m not saying its a bad idea, given certain circumstances such as yours (or mine, when I ran used tires on my cars), but to advertise it like this to people unaware of how tires and cars work... as a BACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL!?!?

Boggles the mind.

I wonder how many tire plugs are in them. Average.

Would love to know how far back the date codes go, too...

At least it’d be easy to check for tire plugs and patches while it’s off the rim.

True. When I put used tires on I knew what car they came off of, and could thoroughly inspect them before using them.

I fear for the general public not knowing what to look for and just slapping on the cheapest thing... I mean, look at some of the NEW tires they carry. Brands I never even heard of and I’ve been selling tires for 20+ years!

Oh, I’ve definitely bought some cheap new tires that I regret buying.

Honestly, I’d sooner recommend a set of used tires in good condition from a well known brand instead of a set of cheapo new tires. I mean, if cost is that much of a factor.

But yeah, the general public isn’t the greatest at anything car related.

You’re driving around on used tires right now...

You sound like a service manager I once knew....

But yes, they’re used, but I used them. I know how many curbs I hit, potholes I smashed, nails I ran over, tread blocks I tore off when driving over some rocks...

I also know that they were mounted properly, don’t have any torn beads, fix-a-flat inside them , etc.

Sure, but the majority of drivers haven’t mounted their own tires, myself included for anything that needs to be balanced, so I don’t know that they were mounted properly, I’m just assuming they were.

True, but you or I may know what to look for. Joe Blow googling cheap tires on the internet ain’t gonna.

No, but they’re also not going to notice the sidewall bubbled or cracked, uneven wear down to the belts, etc. on their current tires. I don’t really see it as that big of a deal because I’m assuming the tires they’re selling are at least in decent shape, they wouldn’t be in business long if they weren’t, and would be an improvement in what they were replacing. This is coming from the perspective of somebody who doesn’t work in a garage and is in a state that has annual safety inspections.

For some folks of meager means, used tires are far better than the ones they are riding on now.

Or they could not spend money on other frivolous things, or shouldn’t have bought such a nice  car, or shouldn’t have had kids, etc, etc, etc, merica
